Drug Uses

Elidel is a prescription medicine you put on your skin (topical) to treat atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. Elidel is for use on the skin only. Elidel is for adults and children age 2 years and older. You can use Elidel for short or intermittent long periods of treatment. Intermittent means starting and stopping repeatedly, as directed by your doctor. You can use it on all affected areas of your skin, including your face and neck.

How Taken

Apply a thin layer of Elidel cream 1% to the affected skin twice daily and rub in gently and completely. Elidel may be used on all skin surfaces, including the head, neck. Elidel should be used twice daily for as long as signs and symptoms persist. Treatment should be discontinued if resolution of disease occurs. If symptoms persist beyond 6 weeks, the patient should be re-evaluated. The safety of Elidel Cream under occlusion, which may promote systemic exposure, has not been evaluated. Elidel cream should not be used with occlusive dressings.

Warnings/Precautions

Do not use Elidel without first talking to your doctor if you have the congenital skin disorder Netherton's syndrome. Before using Elidel, tell your doctor if you: have a skin infection; have a disease of the immune system; or are using any other type of skin product (e.g., cream, ointment, lotion, etc.). Missed Dose

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed, and use only the next regularly scheduled dose.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effect at the site of application is burning or a feeling of warmth. The burning feeling is usually mild or moderate, occurring in the first 5 days of treatment, and the burning usually clears up in a few days. See your doctor if an application site reaction is severe or persists for more than 1 week. Other common side effects include headache, and with long-term intermittent use, common cold/stuffy nose, influenza, sore throat, fever, viral infection, and cough. Learning about acne Acne, often thought to be only a teenager's skin problem, is actually a condition that can affect adults both male and female, although it generally begins during puberty. Taking a proactive approach to treating acne is very important. How you look after your skin every day, along with the treatment you and your doctor select are key steps in your fight to eliminate pimples, preventing scarring and eliminating your acne. There are a number of acne medications that can be used to treat your acne including over-the-counter acne products like Panoxyl®, or prescription drugs including topical treatments, Accutane® and hormone therapies. For more information about medical treatments, click on the appropriate treatment above. If you want to learn more about your acne, read one of the recent articles we have featured here: Hormonal treatments for acne: How they work Hormonal treatments, including oral contraceptives, have long been recognized by dermatologists to be an effective treatment option for women who have acne, no matter how severe. Acne myths: Chocolate and sex cause acne! Have you been told that you shouldn't eat chocolate because it causes acne? Or how about French fries? Pizza? Wrong! Those are just myths, and while some foods can make acne worse for some people, researchers have found that it does not cause it! The big squeeze on acne: A discussion about acne scars We all aspire to a smooth, clear complexion. When pimples arise, the need to flatten them out and squeeze is understandable. Unfortunately though, this may lead to short and long-term problems such as persistent redness, large brown stains (hyperpigmentation) and scarring (loss of skin substructure). Stains and scars are often confused by patients - stains are pale or brown flat marks whereas scars can be seen as indentations or pock marks in the skin. It's now recognized that scars can also develop from small as well as large lumpy pimples. Acne: Pinpoint the trigger While acne commonly develops during the preteen and early teen years, it can also arise in young adulthood and persist for years. Studies show women feel more frustrated by acne than men do - adult women even more so than teenage girls. Why? Dealing with a chronic disorder typically associated with puberty can lead to great frustration. But don't despair if you have acne, effective treatment is available.
